About James Cramphin

James grew up in the independent school world. The son of two career educators at Renbrook School in West Hartford, CT, he attended Renbrook from age three through ninth grade. During his ninth grade year, he experienced the high school admissions process firsthand, ultimately choosing to attend Suffield Academy. Both Renbrook and Suffield were positive, transformative experiences for James, and they prepared him well for his college experience at Brown University. There, he studied Education, Sociology (B.A.), Psychology, and earned All-Ivy honors as a four-year starting pitcher for the Ivy League Champion (2007) baseball team.

After graduating from Brown in 2007, James played baseball professionally for two years before working for Apple and Groupon in Chicago. Seeking a more personally fulfilling career, he shifted to education in 2012, becoming a classroom teacher, coach, advisor, and dorm parent at a junior boarding school (Rumsey Hall School) and then an admissions officer and baseball coach at the Canterbury School and The Governor’s Academy.

Most recently, James served as an Associate Director of Admissions, advisor, and coach at The Governor’s Academy. While at Governor’s, James interviewed hundreds of prospective students and families, evaluated admissions files, chaired admissions committees, and led the Varsity Baseball program as Head Coach.

In 2022, James was honored as the ISL Head Baseball Coach of the Year and was proud to see his teams earn New England Top-10 rankings in 2023 and 2024. Over the course of his coaching career, James has coached dozens of players who have matriculated to a broad range of Division I, II, and III programs across the country. One of his 2024 high school graduates is currently a player in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.

James lives in Woburn, Massachusetts with his wife Amanda and son Cole. He enjoys golfing, playing baseball in Boston’s amateur adult leagues, visiting schools and colleges, and spending time with his family.
